Essential Oils for Writers – Inspiration, Creativity and Focus

Aromatherapy – The Use of Essential Oils

A scent can transport you right back to where you were when you last smelled it – Lavender might remind you of your warm grandmother, and a certain perfume might remind you of your teenage years or your first date. Scent can be highly evocative, the smell of fresh rain after a hot summers day, a crackling wood fire. Your favourite writers blend can take you straight back to when the words were flowing like a cool mountain stream. Manufactures know the power of scent as evidenced by the clever marketing on everything from fabric softener bottles, scented candles to plug-in air-fresheners. But not all scents are created equal!

Avoid plug-in air-fresheners and artificial fragrances

There is a big difference between 100% pure essential oils and synthetic fragrances – Essential oils are natural plant extracts that have many health benefits, and synthetic fragrances reduce our air quality and harm our health. A survey from the Preventative Medicine Reports journal found that one-third of Australians have reported migraines and asthma attacks after inhaling chemically fragranced products. Perfumes and artificial fragrances from incense and scented candles emit chemical pollutants that reduce our air quality, filling it with dangerous chemicals. Candle wicks often contain traces of lead, and paraffin wax and incense can emit chemicals such as benzene, carbon monoxide and formaldehyde, all of which increase the risk of respiratory issues, dizziness, headaches and may even cancer.

For writers who love the ambience of a candle (like I do), the safest candles to use are 100% beeswax or soy, with a natural wick. Fragrance your writing space with 100% pure essential oils, which not only cleanse the air, but smell delicious!

Aromas can have a direct effect on our moods, and I have found the use of essential oils to be very beneficial in getting me quickly and easily into a ‘creative space’. Everything that helps adds to our daily word count, right?

There are lots of gorgeous pure essential blends on the market, and I enjoy trying new ones all the time.

Having studied aromatherapy, and having personally experienced the benefits on mood and health, I had a special blend made for me which I have now made available for other writers and creatives. For more information, click here:

Aromatherapy for Writers Block

There is nothing like the feeling of being in the creative zone. When ideas are raining down on and through you. Need to supercharge your creativity?

Writers often struggle with blocks and creative ‘dry spells’. One cause of this is left brain pressure from not being able to turn off daily routine and switch easily into right brain creative zone.

Being a busy mum, with a day job and juggling my passion and career as an authorpreneur, being able to switch off my right brain (the to-do-list,  brain), and access the creative states of my left brain quickly and easily, is literally the difference between writing 2K on my WIP, or spending the time procrastinating. Of course, there are days that are still a mixture of both (hello, writer here), but there are now far more productive and creative days than not.

Essential oils have different purposes. There are oils that are uplifting, ones that promote memory and aid in study, ones for tranquillity and relaxation, ones for romance and sensuality, ones for clarity and focus, etc.

Having studied aromatherapy, I have played around with various combinations of oils over the years and have discovered the ones that help get me into heightened states of creativity the easiest. Writing flows easiest when you are calm, clear-minded and relaxed.

Essential oils can help activate your ‘right brain’ creative genius with a renewed sense of inspiration and purpose.

Essential oils are my go-to when I need a boost in creativity. They are an essential part of my daily ritual, and I can’t imagine working without them.

If you have a favourite essential oil for writing, I’d love to hear about it! Leave a comment here, email me, or connect with me on social media.

Love and light and a creative flow of words!
